Parshas Toldos: "The Inner Struggle – The Path to Blessing"
29 November 2024
In Parshas Toldos, the Torah says:
"וַיִּתְרֹצְצוּ הַבָּנִים בְּקִרְבָּהּ, וַתֹּאמֶר אִם כֵּן, לָמָּה זֶּה אָנֹכִי; וַתֵּלֶךְ, לִדְרֹשׁ אֶת ה'"
Rashi explains that "וַיִּתְרֹצְצוּ" (vayisrotzetzu) means running. Chazal elaborate that when Rivkah passed by a beis midrash, Yaakov sought to emerge, but when she passed a place of idolatry, Eisav tried to come out.
Rav Meilech Biderman asks: Why did Hashem create such turmoil for Rivkah, with the constant struggle within her womb? What is the lesson for us?
Rav Meilech explains that the very struggle itself is a crucial part of human growth. Life in this world is not meant to be easy or free of challenges. Every person must grapple with their yetzer hara, face confusion, and rise above difficulties. It is through these internal battles that one achieves true spiritual elevation and receives blessings.
This idea is reflected later in the parsha when Yaakov receives Yitzchak’s brachos. The blessings do not come easily or automatically; Yaakov has to disguise himself, take great risks, and overcome his fears. This teaches us that blessings require effort, struggle, and proving oneself worthy.
