The pasuk says:
"לֹא תָסוּר מִן־הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר יַגִּידוּ לְךָ יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאל" (Devarim 17:11).
Rashi explains: “Even if they tell you that right is left or left is right – you must listen to them.”
In other words, even when the words of the Beit Din or a Rav seem to you to be completely mistaken, you are commanded to follow them.
I once heard a beautiful explanation from the mashgiach of Yeshivat Chevron:
The pasuk does not say “on east that it is west,” because east is objectively east and west is objectively west – reality cannot be changed.
But right and left depend on perspective; it depends on where you are standing.
This is exactly the role of the Beit Din – and today, of our Rabbanim and spiritual leaders: to show us the correct perspective.
When we look through their eyes, we realize that what seemed to us as “left” is in truth “right.”
In this way we acquire a proper outlook, one that allows us to see reality clearly and truthfully.
